How does the Eight Week program work?
Spontaneous Happiness is a simple, easy-to-follow plan that builds on each week. In order to get the most out of the plan, it is important that each member participates fully - we are providing the information, guidance and encouragement; you need to provide the action!

Begin by familiarizing yourself with the various sections (visit the Site Guide for more information), introducing yourself in the Community, reading about How to Use the Tools, and taking your Week One Assessments

While each member will use the Spontaneous Happiness site differently, a general guideline would be:

  • Each Monday look for and read your Weekly Email for an outline of what will be presented.
  • Visit the corresponding Weekly Homepage to watch Dr. Weil explain the focus of the week and to read the extended weekly tasks for Body, Mind and Spirit. We strongly encourage you to read the articles, watch the videos, and participate in what Dr. Weil recommends.
  • Use your Tracking Tools. The Breathing, Walking and Mood Meter are vital to tracking your progress through the initial eight weeks. Use them as often as you can for both tracking purposes and encouragement.
  • Write in your Journal. Whether you transfer thoughts from another source or you use the online Journal as your main source for keeping track of your thoughts, try to use it as much as possible. It is a wonderful way to document your thoughts and progress for future reflection.

As you go through each week, these elements will become easier and more familiar. It is worthwhile to push yourself in the beginning to make these tasks part of your daily and weekly routine; in the long run it will only help you achieve your goals of optimal well-being.

What are the Body, Mind and Spirit Assessments?
The Assessments presented in Weeks One, Five and Eight of the plan are important to take. These simple, quick assessments provide a baseline for your present state of physical, mental and spiritual health. There are ten questions in each assessment, and you are encouraged to answer honestly (all answers are kept confidential and not shared with anyone). After answering the questions, you receive a score and feedback on how you can improve in each area.

Your Week One assessment provides you with a baseline on which to begin the plan: it can help you understand what areas of the plan you should focus on and articles and tools that can help. Your Week Five assessment provides an update on your progress. You may have improved in some or all areas, gone down in score, or stayed the same, and additional suggestions will be presented. In Week Eight, you will retake the assessment, and compare your results from Weeks One and Five. If you have followed the plan accordingly, your scores should have improved from when you started.

Keep in mind that each member is different and will have a different timeline for improving their well-being and achieving optimal health. Don't get discouraged if your score is not where you want it to be - remember that the assessments are a guidance tool to help you hone in on areas that can use improvement.

What are the ‘Daily Tools"?
The Daily Tools are a vital part of Spontaneous Happiness: they are designed to help you track your progress throughout the initial eight weeks of the Plan, as well as when you are a Spontaneous Happiness for Life member. The Tools include Breathing, Walking and Mood Meter trackers, an online Journal, and a Calendar that indicates when you have used any of the tools.

You can update your tools on any day, and have the ability to go back and update them once the date has passed if you did not have access to your computer.

  • Breathing Tracker: Breathing is an important part of emotional well-being, and is something Dr. Weil highly recommends to manage your moods. There are a variety of breathing exercises presented throughout the initial eight weeks of the plan, and you are highly encouraged to practice some form every day. Use your Breathing Tracker to indicate you have completed a breathing exercise for any given day.
  • Walking Tracker: Walking is the form of exercise Dr. Weil recommends most. It can be done almost anywhere, is a low-cost form of fitness, and it has health benefits that positively impact the health of the body, the mind and the spirit. Part of each week's checklist is to walk, so use your Walking tracker to indicate when you walked.
  • Mood Tracker: Every day has its highs and lows. This can be due to hormones, weather, activities, or just feeling good (or sad) for no discernable reason. The Mood tracker is best used in conjunction with Journal: simply select your mood for that day (ranging from Poor to Great), and then use your Journal to describe any reasons you can attach to your present mood. This is an effective way to begin linking together events and your mood, so can increase or decrease specific habits or activities so as to create a balancing point for your moods in the future.
  • Journal: Jotting down your thoughts and feelings for future reflection is a wonderful way to document your mental and physical health. We encourage you to use the Journal as often as you can, in any way that makes you comfortable. It is especially helpful when used in conjunction with the Mood Tracker, and we encourage you to jot down why you're feeling a specific way whenever it strikes you to do so!
  • Calendar: The Spontaneous Happiness Calendar provides an easy-to-use snapshot of where you are in the plan, your use of the Tracking Tools, and also offers access new, bonus content to Spontaneous Happiness for Life members. You can see previous days you used your tools, and access previous days to update your tool status if you did not have access to a computer.
  • 30-Day Challenge Tracker: Members of Spontaneous Happiness for Life will also have a button to indicate they completed that month's Challenge for that day. The more you participate, the more exclusive content that is unlocked for you!

As you go through each week, using these tools will become easier and more familiar. It is worthwhile to push yourself in the beginning to make these tools part of your daily and weekly routine; in the long run it will only help you achieve your goals of optimal well-being.

How can I view the videos?
To best view the videos, we suggest: Installing the latest version of Adobe Flash and viewing the videos in Google Chrome. Google Chrome is a reputable browser provided by Google and is the recommended browser for viewing the videos. We also recommend an Internet connection having at least a 1 MB download rate.

Are my answers to questions in the tools and assessments kept personal and confidential?
Yes! Your answers, personal information, and progress throughout the plan is 100% confidential. You can share your progress with members of the Community if you choose to, but that is your decision - none of your personal information, assessment results or tool usage is seen by other members.
